BOHRA HOUSES OF SIDHPUR

This is the cover of my dad's book 'Sidhpur and its Dawoodi Bohra Houses'.

The entrance to a Dawoodi Bohra house in Gujarat.

My dad is an architect and writer who has done some extensive work on the architecture of the Dawoodi Bohra houses of Sidhpur in Gujarat. He was recently quoted in Mint in an article on the subject. You can read it here.

Hi:
Somehow we Indians are poor in maintaining historical structures. I recently heard that the Qutub Minar is tilting (may keel over!). The state of our historical monuments can only enrich the mind.

Our rich and ancient cultural heritage is worth preserving in all its forms to teach our children where we come from. You might have seen the documentary already, but I would recommend "The story of India- by Michael Wood" (was on PBS recently). Its a reasonably well balanced documentary produced by the good old BBC.

If we forget history, we are condemned to repeat it...- dont know who said that ? but it keeps ringing within me.

Then there are some in India who are trying to reverse history. Regressive acts such as destroying old monuments and building new ones could'nt make one feel superior in this day and age, does it?

I am reasonably sure that its not just the paucity of funds. Perhaps the ASI can institute a mechanism such as "UDF - User development fee" and charge people to see well maintained and preserved architecture such as the one in Sidhpur.

Best Wishes

Arif

Hi Arif,

Thanks for pointing me to Michael Wood's film. I hadn't heard of it. I really enjoyed his book - 'The Smile of Murugan' so I'd like to watch his documentary.

I'll try and post some pictures of Sidhpur soon. The houses are gorgeous.

Well.., thanks for tht info there. I'm a student of architecture and this information about the basic form and influences of architecture styles has been really helpful..
Although i'd really wish i can get some more information about the bohra community houses, in the sense that how the spaces inside relate to their daily activities.

Thank you..
