FIRST LADY, FIRST FAUX PAS

The post of President is largely a ceremonial one. Fine suits, or sarees as might be the case soon, hosting, toasting, wining, dining and the right words in the right place are the demands of the job. But the potential first lady President of India, Pratibha Patil, has already committed her first faux pas. In her first press meeting after her candidature was announced, she said she was concerned about the disparities in wealth distribution in our country. She felt however that schemes like the NREGS (National Rural EMPLOYMENT guarantee Scheme) attempted to create more opportunities for the rural poor and congratulated the other first lady Sonia Gandhi for it. But what she really called it, before TV cameras, was Sonia Gandhi's "unemployment guarantee scheme!"

It seems like such errors are a pre requisite for occupying high posts.Or maybe, nerves! She has already started feeling the heat!

There is much hue and cry over the president's election.

On a more serious note, after she becomes the first lady, one of the first things she would be confronted with is the Mhd. Afzal petition. And now I understand why Dr.APJ has just dragged the issue right through the last months of his presidency. He doesn't want to be the fall guy here and it would be the new president who will have to deal with it. I don't see how Pratibha Patil will go about it and I am skeptical.

It's almost certain that she is going to be our Rashtrapati though the term looks odd with a woman and should be rashtrapramukh. Anyway President.

So we must get used to it. After all, at least for five years we all have to endure such controversies and gaffes.

India should be proud about getting a First Woman President in the world's largest democratic country

Nerves it is. Filling Kalam's shoes is surely a toughie.

Hope she gets her act right on Independence Day... probably she needs to be trained on how to salute the national flag.
